The Akita is a large dog originating out of Japan. Akitas were used for guarding, and hunting and dogfighting. With the introdution of the Japanese Tosa, the Akita is mainly a home guardian or a family compainion. The Akita is highly revered in Japan and is viewed almost as a national icon. This breed is also known to have high incidence of GDV (Gastric Dilatation Volvulus). Excess gas trapped in the dog's stomach that causes bloat, and twisting of the stomach. Immediate treatment will be needed.

History

Akitas are not a beginners dog, because they are large powerful and tend to be dominant. Akitas need a strong handler in mind and body. They are pack oriented dogs so a handler must show authority and leadership. They are naturally wary of people they do not know, and early socialization is a must if they are to get along with any other pets. Akitas will try to dominate another dog if it is not submissive to it. Akitas are great guard dogs and will protect it's family at any cost. They also are protective of the children in it's family so if play gets rough with other kids, the Akita will try to protect his pack. This breed may take awhile to train because they are easily bored and stubborn. They are not trick dogs and may only obey and order if it see's a point of it. They are a very loyal breed and will bond very deeply to it's family.

Behavior

Big strong muscular breed with a short muzzle, small erect ears and a tail that's carried over the back. The Akita is double coated with a thick outercoat and a soft dense undercoat. Japanese Akitas come in five colors; white, red, fawn, sesame, and brindle whereas the American version comes in a variety of colors and are larger and heavier. Due to the thickness of their coats Akitas will probably need daily grooming especially during the warmer months when the dog will shed a lot of it's fur.
