Anatolian Shepherd |
Anatolians ancesters more than likely migrated to the area known as Turkey about 1000 A.D. Over the centuries, variations in the region began to develop. The Anatolians, known in the region as Coban Kopegi, became the intrest of Western breeders and they began to develop a standard for the breed. Today Anatolians are still used as flock guardians or home guardians and family companions. They are excellent guard dogs.
The Anatolian was developed to guard his handlers flock from coyotes, bears, wolves, and any other animal that would pose a danger to the flock. They are raised with their flock to form a strong bond with them. This breed is very independent, brave, dominant, stubborn at times, and forceful. With these traits, this is not a breed for beginners. Anatolians are very intelligent and they learn quickly, but may chose not to obey at times. They are very protective of what they percieve as their flock whether it is family and pets or sheep, and they are very untrusting of strangers. This breed can be dominating towards other dogs so early socialization and training is needed at an early age. This is a large breed with a high activity level and will need plenty of room and exercise.
