Karelian Bear Dog

The Bear Dog of Finland is a breed that has not been bred with any other breed. The Karelian is bred for it's hunting instincts and are used to hunt for moose and elk, but will hunt anything. In Finland the Bear Dog is regarded as a national treasure. Bear and Moose test are conducted in Finland to gage the dog's ability and breeding potential. It's ability to hunt and keep his handler safe from a bear has earned it the name Bear Dog. They are known to sacrifice their life to protect their handler. These are hunting dogs that like to move around so it will need plenty of exercise. If you can keep the dog under control it will enjoy running beside a bicycle.

History

Karelians are very loyal family dogs and make great companions. They are also very fiesty dogs that will try to dominate other dogs. This breed is very intelligent, energetic, and cunning. They are excellent hunting dogs. They are silent and tenacious, and know how to keep an animal at bay until his handler arrives. If the animal tries to get away they will bite it on it's backside, or will bark very fast and run around the animal confusing it. They are extremely loyal to their handler and also very territorial, and will alert his handler when someone or something approaches the property. They need a handler that shows authority and provides consistent training and socialization. They are very affectionate with children and love to be with their family as these dogs are very pack oriented.

Behavior

Karelians are black and white coated dogs with erect trianglar ears, a stiff topcoat with a soft and dense underlayer. The males are slightly taller than the females. The tail is kept curled over the back and has a white tip.
