The Bullmastiff is a well built muscular breed. The appearance of the Bullmastiff is one of nobleness, athleticsm, and courage. Males can grow to be 140 lbs., while the female can grow to be 120 lbs. They come in colors of fawn, brindle, red or red-brown, a little white on the chest, and always have a black mask.
The Bullmastiff is a very loyal breed. They have strong protective instincts, and will defend his property and family from anything he perceives as a threat. They may or maynot get along with other dogs that why it is important to socialize the dog in his early stages of life. This breed gets along very well with children, but it is important to maintain supervision while children are around, because the mastiffs are so big that they may accidentally knock over a child.
The Bullmastiff is said to be a cross between the English Mastiff and the Old English Bulldog. They were originally bred to find and immobilize poachers in the early 1800's. Today Bullmastiffs are family companions and guard dogs.
Bullmastif are prone to certain hereditary diseases such as: Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Lymphoma Cancer, Entropion, and Hypothyroidism.
