The Owtcharka is a big powerful dog that may be to much for an inexperienced dog owner. A would be owner should be dominant in character, and physically strong. They are very good with children, but will not view them as their masters. They have very strong protection instincts, and will protect anything it views as it's family or flock with it's life. This breed is very loyal to it's handler, but can also have a mind of it's own. Owtcharkas are used to hide among sheep and keep a look out for preditors such as wolves. When wolves attack the sheep, the Owtcharka will attack the wolves, and will fight two or three at a time to defend his flock. With all of the thick hair on the Owtcharka, it is hard for the wolf to get his teeth into his flesh. These dogs are very untrusting of people it does not know which makes it a great guard dog. They will also try to dominate another dog.
Caucasian Sheepdog should be large, big boned, and muscular. They have three different coats, a long haired coat with a collar, a short haired, and a medium length coat without the collar. Unaltered ears naturally hang forward although most are cropped close to the head. The coat of the long hair will need grooming every so often, while the short hair will need little attention to grooming.

The Caucasian mountain range encompasses the territories of Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey, Ossetia, Daghestan, Kabardino-Balkaria, Iran, Chechnya, and Ingushetia, and is also home to the Caucasian Mountain Dog. The name means sheepdog, shepherd, or shepherd dog. The Owtcharka is part of the Troika, three recognized Russian sheepdogs, with the other two being the bearded South Russian Sheepdog, and the Central Asian Sheepdog. The Owtcharkas were used for centuries to protect property and livestock, hunt bears, fight with wolves, and many other duties, but today they are mainly used as family companions, and property protectors. Highly prized as an aggressive property guardian, this breed is very intimidating and a commited protector. Although some are more aggressive than others, all Owtcharkas are very territorial and dog aggressive, and will need early and careful exposure as well as firm but not forceful training. This breed may look like a big nice fluffy dog, but this is no St. Bernard or Golden Retriever, so would be owners need to be full aware of the dogs temperment before getting one. Make sure to talk with breeders and get afull understanding of the breed.
