Appearance

The Elkhound is a very hardy and sturdy breed measuring about 20.5 in. They are a spitz type dog with erect ears, and a tightly curled tail, a black muzzle and almond eyes. The coat of the Elkhound is both water and dirt resistant. These medium sized dogs has the look of will and determination to complete and task.

Behavior

The Elkhound is a high energy dog outside and relaxed on the inside. They are a very fun loving breed that will get along great with children, but can be dominate with other dogs. They are an independent breed that will be reserved with strangers. They have a sharp bark which will let you know if anyone or anything approaches the property. Elkhounds may be a challenge to train because of their high independent drive, and may only come when called if their attention is not elsewhere. Elkhounds make great family dogs, because of their loyalty and eargerness to be with it's family.

History

The Elkhound was developed to hunt moose, bears, and wolves. They also served as guardians and herders and was one of the few breeds that could do this in freezing temperatures. Elkhounds would take turns jumping back and forth at a cornered animal until their handler arrived. Elkhounds are a bundle of energy, and they also have a very high prey drive which was a desired trait for hunting big game in the Norwegian weather. The Elkhound is the National Dog of Norway.
