Black Russian Terrier |
The Black Russian Terrier was developed for use as a military dog, and a working dog. Breeds used in the makeup of the Russian Terrier include: Caucasian Owtcharka, Rottweiler, the now extinct Moscow Water Dog, Giant Schnauzers, Newfoundland, and the Airedale Terrier. Russian Terriers were bred by state owned Red Star Kennels up until 1957, when a few puppies were sold to civilian breeders.
Black Russian Terriers are highly intelligent, loyal, brave, and confident in themselves. They are not a timid breed, and they will defend their family if it feels that there is a threat. They are not trusting of people they don't know, making them an excellent choice for a guard dog. They are a dominate breed and needs an owner experienced enough to handle them. They love human contact, and will bond strongly to their family. BRT's excel in dog sports and defense training. They need lots of exercise to burn energy, or else they become hypective and destructive.
The build of the Black Russian Terrier is an impression of courage, strength, power, and athleticsm. Male BRT's are noticably more muscular than the females, and the mane around the neck is a lot thicker. The coat of the BRT is hard and dense and may need to be trimmed at least three times a year.
