Sarplaninac Shepherd |
The Sarplaninac is an ancient guarding breed of livestock from the Sar mountains of southern Serbia and Macedonia. The breed was initially recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale in 1939 as the illyrian Shepherd dog. In 1957, at the request of the Yugoslav Canine Federation, the name was changed to the Yugoslav Shepherd Dog- Saplaninac, after the Sar mountains. The breed is currently known as the Macedonian-Yugoslav Shepherd Dog. The breed is naturally stubborn and undemonstative, but with proper training and a authoritive handler, it will excel in a variety of tasks.
Saplaninacs are wary of strangers, and a easy going breed until something or someone presents a danger to his flock or family. This breed is very protective and will attack any threat with swift ferocity. They are gentle with children and small pets, but also needs early socialization. The Sarplaninac will try to impose himself on another dog, dog aggression are common traits for this breed. Sarplaninacs are excellent guard dogs of the property and flock, predator problems are said to be greatly diminished when this breed watches over the herd.
