The Tibetan Mastiff is a rare breed of dog from Tibet. They are used as flock and property guardians to protect from any type of preditors, and any unwanted visitors. The Tibetan nearly became extinct in the early 1900's, but a few were kept and imported by European and American people. The Tibetan is now gaining recognition around the world and participated in it's first dog show at the Westminster Dog Show.

History

The Tibetan is a calm and dignified mastiff. They are very loyal to their family and very protective of them. Early socialization and training of the Tibetan is needed if there are any other family pets. They will get along very well with children in the home, but they may try to dominate another dog. Tibetans tend to be stubborn dogs so it will need obidence training and a owner that will assume the alpha role. They are natural protectors and not at all trusting of strangers, which makes them excellent guard dogs. They will protect the property or flock from what ever they perceive to be a threat.

Behavior

The Tibetan Mastiff is a large, heavy breed of mastiff. The appearance of the Tibetan is a large boned, powerfully built dog. The Tibetan has a long thick coat with a heavy underlayer. The coat may come in colors of black and tan, black, golden brown, or grey with or without any tan coloring. They have a large head with folding ears and a bushy tail that is carried over the back. tibetans will shed large amounts of hair during the summer months, so an owner will need to spend time combing and brushing the Mastiff to remove loose hairs.
